Scary stories to tell, and why they work

Everyone finishes this domain name in their head. That is the point: a whole generation grew up on scary stories told in the dark, and the form still works.

The books

Alvin Schwartz published Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in 1981, retelling folklore and urban legends for children, with Stephen Gammell's nightmarish illustrations. The series was among the most challenged books in American libraries in the 1990s, which made it more popular, not less.

Urban legends

The folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand collected modern legends in The Vanishing Hitchhiker (1981): the hook on the car door, the babysitter and the call from upstairs. They spread because each teller swears it happened to a friend of a friend.

How to tell one

• Make it local. The road outside, the house down the street.
• Go slow before the end. Pause longer than feels comfortable.
• End on a jump. The classic ending is a sudden shout or grab. It works every time.
